August 11-21, 2026
Instructor: Rita Poussaint Nethersole
About this Course
The nationally recognized Certificate of Interpretive Guiding (CIG) program is designed for anyone who wants to learn more about how to develop and lead interpretive programs. This course will introduce you to the history, definitions, and principles of interpretation. During the course, you will develop a program outline and deliver a 10-minute thematic presentation, all with the support of your instructor(s) and fellow participants. You will learn how to make your programs purposeful, enjoyable, relevant, organized, and thematic, and leave ready to facilitate meaningful experiences that inspire engagement with the world around us.
In addition to the CIG basics, participants will learn to craft programs and messaging using culturally sensitive language and perspectives, as well as explore strategies to engage with diverse communities.

Course Schedule
Rather than extended full-day Zoom meetings, this online course is intentionally structured as a series of shorter sessions for accessibility and cognitive sustainability. Shorter daily online sessions support a variety of learning styles, help reduce Zoom fatigue, and create more opportunities for participation, reflection, and real-world application. Students are encouraged to engage with concepts over time rather than trying to absorb everything in a single marathon session.
- August 11-14 (T-F), 1-5 pm ET – instruction, discussion, work time
- August 17-19 (M-W), 1-5 pm ET – instruction, discussion, individual consultations
- August 20 (Th) – no class, presentation prep time (instructor available for individual consultations)
- August 21 (F), 1-5 pm ET– students’ final presentations.
Please note that the last day often runs a bit over. Please allow some flexibility with our end time on that day.
Class is a mix of instruction, discussion, live exercises, and individual consultations. Students must attend all classes synchronously on Zoom, including the presentations of the other students, to qualify for the certificate. In order to complete all course requirements, additional time outside of class instruction will likely be necessary.
Platform and Access
You will need a computer or laptop with a camera and microphone, with reliable Internet access, and the ability to log in to Zoom.com for the online training. A smartphone or tablet is a useful backup device for emergencies, but they are not recommended as they can limit participation in activities and restrict the visibility of course materials. For co-workers taking the course together, please note that you will each need your own device and a quiet workspace for breakout groups. In order to create a collaborative and interactive learning environment, we do ask that you remain on camera for the duration of class.
