About this Course

The nationally recognized Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) program is designed for anyone who wants to learn more about how to develop and lead interpretive programs. This course will introduce you to the history, definitions, and principles of interpretation. During the course, you will develop a program outline and deliver a 10-minute thematic presentation, all with the support of your instructor(s) and fellow participants. You will learn how to make your programs purposeful, enjoyable, relevant, organized, and thematic, and leave ready to facilitate meaningful experiences that inspire engagement with the world around us.

Course Schedule

Class is a mix of instruction, discussion, live exercises, worktime, and breaks to mitigate Zoom fatigue. Students must attend all classes synchronously on Zoom, including the presentations of the other students to qualify for certificate.

  • August 12-16 1:00-5:00 pm Eastern time. Mixed Instruction, workshopping and in-class worktime.
  • August 19 10:00 am-5:30 pm Eastern Time. From 1:00-3:00 there will be final instruction. The rest of the day will be one-on-one meetings to prepare for your final presentation. You are not required in the zoom space except for class and your individual meeting time.
  • August 20 1:00-5:00 pm Eastern time. Final presentations and course wrap-up. Class on this day can run a little long so please be prepared to be flexible with our end time on this final day.
  • There is no instruction on Saturday or Sunday.

Platform and Access

You will need a computer or laptop with camera and microphone, with excellent Internet access, for the online training. A smartphone or tablet can work in an emergency, but students report that it’s cumbersome. For co-workers taking the course together, please note that you will each need your own computer (and quiet space) for breakout groups. We do ask that you remain camera on for the duration of class.
This course uses Zoom, Padlet, and Google Drive. Please be sure you are able to access all online tools and update your zoom client prior to the start of class.
