About the Course
Creating meaningful interpretation begins with thoughtful, visitor-centered planning. Interpretive plans developed using a Visitor Experience Approach lay the foundation for the entire journey a visitor has at a site—from orientation to engagement to lasting impact. This course will help you build a comprehensive understanding of the interpretive planning process with a focus on designing experiences that connect deeply with diverse audiences.
You’ll explore core principles of communication and learn how they shape visitor experiences. Through this lens, you'll identify key audiences, develop a strong theme structure, select appropriate interpretive media, and apply tools such as logic models and evaluation strategies. Hands-on activities throughout the course will help you apply your learning. To integrate your experiences, you will work collaboratively in a small group to create an abbreviated Visitor Experience and Interpretation Plan for the host site. Please note: The products created during this course may not be submitted as evidence of performance in applications for NAI's Certified Interpretive Planner (CIP) credential.
