Volunteers are the backbone to many of our organizations. They accomplish huge amounts of work and save us thousands of dollars in wages. But how do you get the right volunteer for the job? This session explores writing job descriptions, marketing the job, and interviewing prospective volunteers. You will leave with forms, ideas, and questions to get you started right away. Even if you already have a volunteer program, these tips will help you make the right match of volunteer and task.

Karin Hostetter is a founding, life member of NAI and has been involved with the certification program since its earliest days. She currently holds her CIG, CIH, CIGT, and CIHT. She has completed both the Planning and Coaching workshops as well and is one of NAI's five Lead Trainers. Karin helped moved NAI's certification program to the online format when is became necessary, believing that online learning could and should be just as engaging as face-to-face training. Karin has written several articles for Legacy, serves as a reviewer for CIGT applicants, scores media and Legacy awards, and is a frequently seen presenter at national and regional workshops.

Her career in interpretation includes front line interpretation for natural and cultural institutions including first-person living history; facilitating many national program trainings such as Project WILD, Project WET, Project Learning Tree, and others; training college students, staff, and volunteers both across the US and internationally. As owner of Interpret This, Karin offers a variety of face-to-face and online training programs around interpretive skills, interpretive writing, volunteer program management, as well as program and curricula development.

Keeping volunteers engaged and happy takes work. This session focuses on training, recognition, and evaluation of volunteers. Why do volunteers give their time? What are they looking for in return? Matching volunteer wants with organization deliverables makes all the difference in whether a volunteer sticks around or looks for another place to offer time and expertise.

No matter how well thought out and responsive a volunteer program is designed, challenges crop up. This session investigates firing volunteers, navigating change, solving problems, managing liability, and structuring programs. How up-to-date is your volunteer handbook? Bring challenges from your own volunteer program and we will look at what might be changed structurally to give better results.

Registration and Accessing a Webinar

Pre-registration is required for all webinars. Registration closes at 6 a.m. Pacific the day of the webinar. You must sign in to your NAI account to register for a webinar. If you need help, email [email protected] to have your login credentials reset. Once you register for a webinar, you will receive an email confirming your registration as well as the webinar date and time.

Webinars are held on Zoom. Login instructions and the link to access the webinar on Zoom are sent the day before the webinar from [email protected]. Please add this email address to your contacts list to ensure you receive the login instructions. We also recommend you check for any system updates to your computer or Zoom prior to the webinar to ensure you are able to access the webinar the day of the event.

If you are logged into your NAI account, webinar confirmation emails and login instructions can also be found on your account page under the ‘My Communications’ tab.

Group Discounts

Institutional and Commercial members can register staff (who do not hold current individual memberships) at the member rate. Institutional and Commercial liaison members can check their rosters by visiting their organization's account page. Contact [email protected] to update your roster.

Cancellation Policy

NAI will accept registration cancellations or changes, in writing, up to 5 business days prior to a webinar. Participants can choose to change their registration to a different course or webinar of equal or lesser value for free, or receive a refund minus a $10 processing fee. Changes and cancellations should be emailed to [email protected]. Cancellations and no shows will be sent a link to the recording of the webinar, when available.

Continuing Education Hours

You will earn continuing education hours equal to the duration of the webinar. NAI staff will verify your attendance and automatically record the hours on your account. To ensure we can verify your attendance, please login to the webinar with your full name via Zoom. We recommend you check for any system updates to your computer or Zoom prior to the webinar to ensure your ability to login.
